Accident Injury

[IMAGE] A6 ink and watercolour

My Mom fell down the stairs and cracked a rib.  Painful!  The main image in my mind from last nights visit to the hospital is how ridicously high her blood pressure rose.  The only reason they let her home is because she aced all her other tests!  Pain is a stressful thing.

Simply Successful Secrets

Posted by rachelcreative on March 31, 2007

I’m part of an experiment ;-)  Well a meme (I learnt a new word today!).

I was tagged by Camille and you can read more about the project on the Today is That Day blog where it all started.

Like many others it took me a while to figure out how I am successful … I’m not successful am I …??

Realising that for me success isn’t just about money, status, adoration or output … I’m ready to share …

My top 10 habits for success:

1. Love

Love fully and wholly.  Love with acceptance and open heart.  Everything and everyone and all things (well, almost all ;-)

2. Laugh

Giggle, laugh and belly laugh. Find and create humour. Smile. Feed my child like side. Allow joy in my life.

3. Communicate

Email, blog, phone, talk, listen, write, body language, eye contact, wave, touch.  Communication in and out - like breath in my body

4. Nuture my creativity

… in any kind of way - doodle, draw, journal, day-dream, get lost in a detail of life, write, observe, paint, sculpt, daydream, play - use my creativity however, whenever, wherever.

5. Sleep

Lots. Ideally get the sleep my body wants and not take sleep as measured by a clock

6. Wrap myself with quiet

Quiet … a luxury.  Allow my brain, creativity, body and soul to breathe

7. Empathise

See the world and all life in it in a million different ways - it’s a gift but I use it, use it, use it … never to lose it

8. Use positivity

Find positivity in difficult things, accept positivity into my life, use positive thinking to challenge negative nastiness

9. Trust

Trust myself, trust those I love, trust my instincts, trust that it all works out in the end.  Related to this are beliefs/habits of ”just do it”, “this is a small detail of a big picture that I can’t see yet” and “worrying won’t change the outcome”

10. Stop … and think

When I’m in a rush or feeling rash - stop and think and check things over. When I’m tangled up in mood or emotion - stop and think and apply another secret from this list.  When I’m in pain or discomfort or exhausted - stop and think and do right things, good things.

This was a very enlightening exercise.  Thanks to Camille for dragging me in on it :-)

Windows Frustration (Doodle)

Posted by rachelcreative on March 30, 2007

Spent hours this afternoon getting my mom’s PC up to date with it’s Windows updates.  Even Norton updates took me an hour to sort.  Still more Windows updates to do. Sigh.

Why do they have to make software so unfriendly?  Especially when it’s integral to using the PC.  Constant warnings and messages scare my mom - so she’s reluctant to use the PC and so never gets comfey with it.

So annoying to spend all that money on an operating system to have to download fix after fix after fix!  My mom is still on dial up (it’s sooo painful) - so I had to kidnap her hard drive to talk to my broadband.  It would cost a fortune otherwise.

Anyway - during my hours and hours of babysitting the PC I got to doodling to vent some frustration.

I was so tired it brought on my ME/CFS brain fog and I spelt “why” wrong.  How embarrassing!

Worrying About Worry Beads (Doodle)

Posted by rachelcreative on March 30, 2007

I wanted to buy some worry beads (mala beads) but I was struggling to find ethically sourced and couldn’t decide on what material I wanted for my beads.

It’s the kind of purchase I only want to make once - and then spend a lifetime using them … so I lay awake last night worrying about which worry beads to buy.  Ironic.

I found the right set this morning and my order is placed.  Phew.  I can get on with relaxing now.

Get the Girl 2006 (Painting)

Posted by rachelcreative on March 28, 2007

Another piece from 2006 not posted before.  This painting plopped into the world much of it’s own accord - I think I was just a conduit.  Up to this point I hadn’t done a painting for years.  It might have been due to 2 weeks of Julia Cameron’s Morning Pages - or just the beginning of a new phase in my life (even if it is a sad face!)

Sculpture from 2006

Posted by rachelcreative on March 28, 2007

Inspired and confident from all your kind support I’d thought it might be fun to share some old work with you.

Starting with my first pieces of sculpture.  Both from 2006.

Figure without smile

firstsculpture2

This was my first piece of sculpture.  About 6 inches high made from paper mache pulp.  Polystyrene foam used as armature (I love carving polystyrene!). The figure came from some bad emotions, head hung low and arms lifeless.

Tree of Life

tree_of_life_1

Happier times!  Inspired by the work I did on our wedding invitations and stationery, in turn inspired by one of Klimt’s friezes featuring tree of life and gorgeous spirals.  It needs another coat of paint but as it’s been lying around for a year without getting that I thought I might as well share it as is!

Paper mache (mixture of paper strips and pulp) on wire with acrylic paint. Some polystyrene foam within the base to bulk it out.

If I get to do more paper mache sculpture I might even tell you my pulp recipe ;)

I found a new button on our camera.  Cool.

Strange how monochrome can make dull subjects look more interesting.  Add a splash of colour and it’s all glammed up (or an eighties throw back!).

Frankeinstory - Loved and Lost (Cut-Up)

Posted by rachelcreative on March 26, 2007

Frankeinstory - Loved and Lost

1. Every one loved Elizabeth.

2. Harmony was the soul of our companionship, and the diversity and contrast that subsisted in our characters drew us nearer together.

3. Never was she so enchanting as at this time when she recalled the sunshine of her smiles and spent them upon us.

4. These thoughts supported my spirits, while I pursued my undertaking with unremitting ardour.

5. It was not joy only that possessed me; I felt my flesh tingle with excess of sensitiveness, and my pulse beat rapidly.

6. What could I do?

7. At that instant my father entered.

8. I gnashed my teeth, and ground them together, uttering a groan that came from my inmost soul.

9. There was always scope for fear, so long as anything I loved remained behind.

10. “Make me happy, and I shall again be virtuous.”

11. A strange multiplicity of sensations seized me, and I saw, felt, heard, and smelt, at the same time; and it was, indeed, a long time before I learned to distinguish between the operations of my various senses.

12. Happy, happy earth!

13. Her voice was musical, but unlike that of either of my friends.

14. “He did not succeed.”

15. I paused.

16. “My travels were long, and the sufferings I endured intense.”

17. His words had a strange effect upon me.

18. “This is what it is to live,” he cried, “now I enjoy existence!”

19. I was formed for peaceful happiness.

20. I paused to collect myself, and then entered the chamber.

21. “Are you better now, sir?” said she.

22. Those were the last moments of my life during which I enjoyed the feeling of happiness.

23. The wind, which had fallen in the south, now rose with great violence in the west.

24. He was soon borne away by the waves and lost in darkness and distance.

One sentence from each chapter of Frankenstein by Mary Shelley placed together in an attempt to form a new story.  Sentences are in chapter order and unchanged except for closing quote marks to tidy a couple of sentences.

This Frankeistory was motivated by wanting to make a love story but the writing proved so dark it was difficult to get a happy ending!  Sentences were selected (sometimes several from each chapter) and then worked together for the most pleasing flow and narrative.
